Jack in the Box Egg White & Turkey Sandwich

Jack in the Box introduces their version of McDonald’s Egg White Delight with the Egg White & Turkey Breakfast Sandwich.

Egg White & TurkeyTo try the Egg White & Turkey Breakfast Sandwich I went to the Jack in the Box at 10537 Scripps Poway Parkway, San Diego CA 92131. I went inside so I could ask a few questions with my order. Service was very slow with very few customers in the lobby. My question for the cashier was if it was possible to get egg whites on any other breakfast sandwich. (McDonald’s allows you to substitute egg whites for any of their breakfast sandwiches.) I was told that this was the only sandwich that came with egg whites. However, according to the official press release dated December 30th 2013 from Jack in the Box “beginning today, all of Jack in the Box’s breakfast sandwiches can be made customized to include egg whites at no additional cost. That’s no yolk!” I guess he did not get the memo.

Tasting the Egg White & Turkey Sandwich

Egg White & Turkey

The Egg White & Turkey Sandwich comes with a slice of tomato, grilled turkey, a slice of American cheese and egg whites on the Jack in the Box regular bun. My first thoughts were that the tomato was going to be too much for this small sandwich. Well, I was right. The egg whites and grilled turkey have no taste to speak of. The regular bun from Jack in the Box is also tasteless. The cheese was so melted that it could no longer be noticed. The only thing I could taste was the tomato. Yuck! Who wants to eat a plain warm tomato sandwich? Not me!  On the plus side, just as McDonald’s does, the egg whites used at Jack in the Box are just that, real egg whites and nothing more.

Egg White & TurkeyThe egg whites had a good volume that made them light and fluffy. I like the White Cheddar Cheese better than the American cheese. The mild flavor complemented the egg whites without overpowering it as I think the American cheese would have. The saltines of the Canadian bacon works very well with the egg whites. I thought a whole grain English muffin would be dry and grainy. However, McDonald’s is somehow able to provide a healthier better tasting English muffin while maintaining the consistency of the original. Overall, I like the mild flavor of the Egg White Delight.

For taste there is no debate in my mind that the McDonald’s Egg White Delight is by far the better tasting Egg White Breakfast sandwich. The Egg White & Turkey is just too plain with no flavor. Comparing the two sandwiches for nutrition it is very close. The numbers are so close on almost everything that you could almost call it a draw. The one standout nutrition fact though is for Fiber. The Jack in the Box Egg White & Turkey sandwich only has 1 gram of Fiber while the McDonald’s Egg White Delight has 5 grams of Fiber. This is a significant difference when it comes to eating healthy.

Egg White & TurkeyThe one place were the Jack in the Box Egg White & Turkey has the McDonald’s Egg White Delight beat on is on the price. The Egg White & Turkey is only $1.99 while the Egg White Delight is $3.99.

Does saving only 50 calories translate into a healthier meal? In this case, yes. Those 50 calories all come from fat so you are also reducing the calories from fat by 50. This in turn gives you 5 less grams of total fat and 2 less grams of Saturated fat. The most significant nutrition fact that you save on though is from Cholesterol. You go from 260 mg, which was 87% of your daily allowance, down to only 25 mg. Now you are only using 8% of you daily allowance for Cholesterol. Another positive is that you get one more gram of fiber. Everything else remains the same.

Summary

Eating healthy should not mean sacrificing taste. Unfortunately, the Egg White & Turkey does just that. If you want to eat healthier off the Jack in the Box breakfast menu then order any of the other breakfast sandwiches that you actually like and substitute the egg for the egg whites. For an even better option go for the McDonald’s Egg White Delight that is by far the better Egg White Breakfast sandwich. It tastes better than the Egg White & Turkey and it is a little healthier with the 4 extra grams of fiber.

Jack in the Box Bacon Insider Review

For a limited time your can get your bacon fix at Jack in the Box with the Bacon Insider. The Jack in the Box Bacon Insider is a BLT burger infused with bacon at every level. The bacon is above the burger, below the burger and even mixed into the burger patty, you can even find bacon in the mayo. What more can you ask for.

Jack in the Box Bacon Insider

I picked up a Bacon Insider sandwich at the Jack in the Box at 9337 Mission Gorge Road, Santee CA, 92071. This is a well-run Jack in the Box and service is usually very good. This time was no exception. Service was friendly, quick and the sandwich was served hot and fresh.

The Jack in the Box Bacon Insider Sandwich

The Jack in the Box Bacon Insider is more than just a bacon cheeseburger. Yes, as you would expect you get plenty of hickory smoked bacon strips. In fact, the hamburger patty is sandwiched between the bacon strips. Then, Jack in the Box takes it up a notch by adding pieces of bacon mixed right into the hamburger patty. Jack in the Box does not stop there with the bacon. They also mix bits of bacon into the creamy mayo. Then on top of all that, you get plenty of crisp lettuce, two slices of tomato and a slice of American cheese. All this served on a brioche bun.

Jack in the Box Bacon Insider

The first question I had was “what is a brioche bun?” What I found out was that Brioche is a French bread with a high egg and butter content with a bit of sugar. This makes the bread light a puffy with a golden flaky crust and a little sweet. Absolutely, this is what I got. Jack in the Box’s version of a Brioche bun was light and puffy on the inside with a golden flaky crust on the outside, and a little sweet. Using this soft, sweet bun with all the salty bacon balances out the flavors perfectly.

Jack in the Box Bacon Insider First off, this is a good-looking sandwich. It looks like a burger from a fine restaurant. The Bacon Insider looks juicy and very tempting to eat. My first reaction when I took a bite was wow this tastes like a fantastic BLT. I loved that there was lots of crisp lettuce, two slices of tomato and lots of hickory-smoked bacon. The mayo has a hint of bacon mixed in so every bite includes the taste of bacon. The burger patty with the bacon bits mixed in is also great. The only thing that I really could not taste was the American cheese. Therefore, I am not sure if it would make much difference in the taste if you ordered it without the cheese.

Burger King’s Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich

Is the Burger King’s Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich worth a try? Does it taste any good and what about the nutrition facts for this sandwich? How does it compare to the McDonald’s McRib or even to Burger King’s own Rib Sandwich. In addition to answering these questions, I will also answer the question of what is in the pork meat for each of these sandwiches.

To try the Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich I went to the Burger King at 6780 North Durango Drive in Las Vegas, Nevada 89149. I ordered my sandwich in drive thru. I went at lunchtime and the drive thru line was busy but service was fast and the person at the window was friendly. I was served a hot and fresh Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich and fries.

Burger King’s Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich

Let me start by saying that I am pleased to announce that Burger King’s Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich is actually very good. After so many bad reviews for Burger King, I was wondering if I would ever be able to give them a good review. From their overly salty Philly Chicken Sandwich or their poorly put together Wisconsin White Cheddar Whopper or even their Rib Sandwich with a rib patty that did not really taste like pork, I was not finding very much to like.

Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich

The Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich uses the same toasted artisan style bun as the Burger King’s Rib Sandwich. I like the bun as it is soft on the inside yet strong enough on the outside to keep all ingredients inside the bun. The pulled pork was tender and actually tasted like pork meat. The pulled pork was combined with their Memphis BBQ Sauce to provide a sweet and smoky flavor that was also very good. This is not the same tangy BBQ Sauce that is used with Burger King’s Rib Sandwich. The crisp sliced onions add some crunch and works well on this sandwich. Instead of cheese, Burger King adds a Sweet Southern Dressing or “Cole Slaw Sauce” to provide the creaminess for this sandwich. Overall, the Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich is very good.

Burger King’s Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich Nutrition Facts

The Burger King Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich is 7.9 ounces and only 470 calories with 140 of those calories coming from fat. Except for Sodium, that is more than double what you would want for a sandwich of this size at 1420 mg or 59% of the recommended daily allowance the rest of the nutrition facts are right around what you should have for a sandwich of this size. Total Fat of 16 grams and Saturated Fat at 4.5 grams is good for this size sandwich. There are no Trans Fats. Cholesterol of 80 mg is in line for this size sandwich. Total Carbohydrates of 61 grams is also good. You only get 1 gram of Dietary Fiber. Sugars are at 28 grams. A huge plus is that Protein is very good at 27 grams. The only known allergens for the Burger King Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich are Wheat and Egg. I would not call the Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich health food, however I also would not call it unhealthy either. Compared to Burger King’s Rib Sandwich and the McDonald’s McRib it is the healthiest of the three.

Burger King’s Rib Sandwich

Burger King's Rib SandwichThe first plus for Burger King’s Rib Sandwich is that the toasted artisan style bun is very good. The bun is soft and slightly sweet. The bun for the Rib Sandwich held together well and tasted fresh. The next plus is the tangy BBQ Sauce. The BBQ Sauce was very good and combined the sweet with tangy to provide good flavor to the Rib Sandwich. The crispy bread and butter pickles were also a great addition that added a little crispness to this sandwich. I left the Boneless Rib Patty to last because it was ok, but not great considering the rest of the sandwich. The charring on the patty was a welcome addition and did add some flavor to the patty. The problem I had with the Rib Patty was its taste. As I said, it was ok but it tasted like the processed meat patties you get in those old school TV dinners. It tastes kind of like meat but you are not sure what kind of meat.

Everything in the McRib comes together to bring sweet, tart, texture and taste to life.

Is it Really Pork Meat?

When I first posted my review of Burger King’s Rib Sandwich the number one question I kept getting was “What kind of meat is in the Rib Sandwich?” Here I am going to provide the list of ingredients for each of the three sandwiches and try to explain what it all means.

Burger King’s Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork

Burger King's Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork Ingredients

PULLED PORK- pork, barbeque sauce (water, high fructose corn syrup, tomato paste, distilled vinegar, sugar, salt, modified food starch, mustard (water, vinegar, mustard bran, salt), natural smoke flavor, tamarind extract, sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate (preservatives), caramel color, spices, ground paprika, malic acid, tomato powder, citric acid, garlic powder, onion powder).

The first listed ingredient is pork and really, that is the only ingredient for the meat in this sandwich. The rest of the listed ingredients are for the barbeque sauce that the pulled pork is marinated in. This is good because this means that the meat is all pork, no fillers or preservatives. Even the barbeque sauce is good health wise. There are a few preservatives in the BBQ sauce (sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate and citric acid) but nothing out of the ordinary. The rest of the BBQ ingredients make up the flavors for the sauce.

Burger King’s Rib Patty

Burger King’s Rib Patty Ingredients

PORK RIB PATTY: Pork, Water, Less than 2% of Salt , Sodium Phosphate, Sugar, Flavoring, Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (Soybean, Palm, Cottonseed), Maltodextrin (Corn & Potato), Grill Flavor from Vegetable Oil, Disodium Guanylate, Disodium Inosinate, Smoke Flavor, Vinegar, Natural Flavor.

Again, we start off with Pork as the first listed ingredient. However, this time all the other listed ingredients are added to the pork to make the patty. Unlike the Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork list of ingredients for flavoring where you know what each item is, here the list is just Flavoring, Grill Flavor, Smoke Flavor and of course Natural Flavor. We have no way of knowing what these are and most likely these are not natural or they would have been listed. Next there are plenty of preservatives and fillers. No wonder the meat that makes up this patty has that processed taste.

McDonald’s McRib Patty

McDonald’s McRib Patty Ingredients

MCRIB PORK PATTY: Pork, Water, Salt, Dextrose, Preservatives (BHA, Propyl Gallate, Citric Acid).

Another good start with Pork being the number one ingredient. The rest of the ingredients are for flavor (water, salt and Dextrose (Sugar)) and preservatives. I like that the list is short and there are no fillers in the McDonald’s Pork patty.

Summary

It is hard to beat the McDonald’s McRib when it comes to taste and even though I like Burger King’s Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich a lot, I can not bring myself to say that it is better. What I will say is that it is very good in its own right. You can avoid Burger King’s Rib Sandwich, as the pork patty just does not taste like pork.

From a nutrition standpoint Burger King’s Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich is the clear winner. It is the healthiest of the three and uses the most natural ingredients. McDonald’s McRib is also made with real pork with no fillers. The pork used in Burger King’s Rib Sandwich uses fillers and many preservatives.

McDonald’s New Quarter Pounders Replace Angus Burgers

McDonald's LogoMcDonald’s replaces their Angus Burgers with three new Quarter Pounders. The pricier McDonald’s Angus Burgers are no longer available. However, two of the Angus Burgers are back as Quarter Pounders. The Bacon & Cheese Quarter Pounder and the Deluxe Quarter Pounder are direct replacements to the retired Angus Burgers. The Bacon Habanero Ranch Quarter Pounder is a completely new third option.

McDonald’s has made the decision to retire the meatier Angus Burgers partly due to rising beef prices and customers desire for healthier menu options. The Angus Burgers were the least healthy burgers on the McDonald’s menu topping out at 790 calories and 41 grams of fat for the Angus CBO.

In this article, I will review the three new Quarter Pounders for taste along with the Nutritional facts for each. I will also provide reviews and Nutrition Facts for the regular Quarter Pounder with Cheese and the Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese.

To try the new Quarter Pounders I went to the McDonald’s at 8480 Farm Road in Las Vegas Nevada 89131. I ordered my new Quarter Pounders over several days using the drive-thru each time. The drive-thru lines at this location where always long and it took a while to get to the window. Once I got to the window the service did get better. The new Quarter Pounders were served hot and fresh each time and the people were friendly.

Bacon & Cheese Quarter Pounder

McDonald's Bacon & Cheese Quarter Pounder

The Bacon & Cheese Quarter Pounder replaces the Bacon & Cheese Angus Burger. The Bacon & Cheese Quarter pounder is made with a quarter pound (“before cooking”) of 100% Beef with a slice of American Cheese, thick-cut Applewood Smoked Bacon, crinkle-cut Pickles, Red Onions, Ketchup and Mustard on a toasted Bakery Style Bun.

McDonald's Bacon & Cheese Quarter Pounder - Open

The Angus Bacon & Cheese was my favorite McDonald’s regular menu Angus Burger. Although, the Angus CBO that was only available for a limited time was my all time favorite Angus Burger. That being said I could honestly say that the Bacon & Cheese Quarter Pounder is an acceptable replacement for the Angus Bacon & Cheese. The new Bakery Style Bun is not as dry as the regular Quarter Pounder bun. The new Applewood Smoked Bacon has a lot of flavor. I like McDonald’s regular pickles a lot but, the crinkle-cut pickles on this burger are perfect. Overall, the Bacon & Cheese Quarter Pounder is a great tasting burger.

You are not going to be eating a McDonald’s Bacon & Cheese Quarter Pounder to be healthy. At 600 calories, you are getting almost a third (30%) of your daily calories in this sandwich. That part is fine. However, many of the bad nutrition facts for this sandwich far exceed the 30% daily allowance. With 29 grams of Total Fat or 45% of the total daily allowance, the sandwich has one and a half times what you would want for a sandwich with this many calories. Saturated Fat at 13 grams or 65% of daily allowance is more than double what you would want. Cholesterol is only a little high at 105 mg or 35% of daily allowance. Sodium is also double the daily allowance at 1440 mg or 60% of daily allowance. Another negative is that Dietary Fiber is low with only 3 grams or 12% of daily allowance. Sugars are 12 grams. On the plus side total carbohydrates are half what you are allowed at 48 grams or 16%. A huge plus is that Protein is very good at 37 grams or 74% of the daily allowance. The known allergens for the McDonald’s Bacon & Cheese Quarter Pounder are Wheat, Soy Lecithin and Milk.

Deluxe Quarter Pounder

McDonalds' Deluxe Quarter Pounder

The Deluxe Quarter Pounder replaces the Deluxe Angus Burger. The Deluxe Quarter pounder is made with a quarter pound (“before cooking”) of 100% beef with a slice of American cheese, a ripe tomato, leaf lettuce, crinkle-cut pickles, red onions, mayonnaise and mustard on a toasted bakery style bun. Calling this a Deluxe Quarter Pounder is appropriate as all the ingredients combine to make this Quarter Pounder a great tasting deluxe burger.

Nutrition wise you are doing a little better with the McDonald’s Deluxe Quarter Pounder over the Bacon & Cheese Quarter Pounder. However, I still would not call this sandwich healthy. At 540 calories, you are getting almost a third (27%) of your daily calories in this sandwich. This is fine. However, many of the bad nutrition facts for this sandwich far exceed the 27% daily allowance. With 27 grams of Total Fat or 42% of the total daily allowance, this sandwich is also over one and a half times what you would want for a sandwich with this many calories. Saturated Fat at 11 grams or 55% of daily allowance is also more than double what you would want from this sandwich. Cholesterol is okay at 85 mg or 28% of daily allowance. Sodium is a little high at 960 mg or 40% of daily allowance. Another negative is that Dietary Fiber is low with only 3 grams or 12% of daily allowance. Sugars are 9 grams. On the plus side total carbohydrates are half what you are allowed at 48 grams or 16%. A huge plus is that Protein is very good at 29 grams or 58% of the daily allowance, but not as good as the Bacon & Cheese Quarter Pounder. The known allergens for the McDonald’s Deluxe Quarter Pounder are Wheat, Soy Lecithin, Milk and Egg.

McDonald's Bacon Habanero Ranch Quarter Pounder - Open

The Bacon Habanero Ranch Quarter Pounder does not taste as good as the other two Quarter Pounders. The main problem was the main ingredient, the spicy-cool Habanero Ranch Sauce. When it comes to spicy, McDonald’s continually misses the mark. Just as with the new Spicy Chicken Sandwich, McDonald’s over does it with the spicy. For these sandwiches, the spicy just overwhelms the sandwich and that is the only thing you can taste. I am not against all things spicy, as I did like the Jack in the Box Chipotle Chicken Club sandwich.

Quarter Pounder with Cheese

McDonald's Quarter Pounder

The Quarter Pounder with Cheese is made with a quarter pound (“before cooking”) of 100% beef with two slices of American cheese, slivered onions, tangy pickles and mustard and ketchup on a toasted sesame seed bun.

The McDonald’s Quarter Pounder with Cheese is a McDonald’s staple. If you need to eat in the car while driving this is the go to burger. The cheese melts around the onions, pickles, and beef to keep everything inside the bun. The Quarter Pounder is big enough to be a meal yet small enough so you can eat it with one hand. It also tastes good. With two slices of American cheese, you defiantly have a cheesy burger. Even though the basic ingredients for the Quarter Pounder with Cheese can be found on just about any burger, the individual flavors of the onions, pickles, mustard and ketchup are all present and you can taste each one with each bite.

This burger also provides you with almost all the Protein you need for the day at 48 grams or 98% of the daily allowance. The known allergens for the McDonald’s Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese are Wheat, Soy Lecithin and Milk.

Summary

Even though the Angus Burgers are gone from the McDonald’s menu, two of the new Quarter Pounders are an acceptable replacement. The Bacon & Cheese Quarter Pounder and the Deluxe Quarter pounder are great and are worth trying. However, I can not recommend the Bacon Habanero Ranch Quarter Pounder. I could not taste anything except for the too spicy Habanero sauce.

Can Burger King’s Rib Sandwich Dethrone the McRib?

Burger King's Rib SandwichBurger King’s Rib Sandwich is their latest introduction of new sandwiches to help bring new life to their stores. Over the past year, Burger King has done a good job of introducing new sandwiches that look interesting and seem like they would do well for them like the Wisconsin White Cheddar Whopper and the Philly Chicken Sandwich. Unfortunately, Burger King falls down when it comes to execution. Many of the stores still look old and tired.  They need to do more to get the quality up at the store level so we can enjoy the great offerings that they have worked so hard to create and promote.

The Burger King Rib Sandwich is trying to follow the McDonald’s success of only offering the McRib for a limited time each year. Burger King is trying the same philosophy to build buzz around its Rib Sandwich by only offering the Rib Sandwich on their Summer Menu. Simply just called “Rib Sandwich” there is very little originality in the name, concept or how it is being promoted.

To try the Rib Sandwich I went to the Burger King at 6780 North Durango Drive in Las Vegas Nevada 89149. I ordered my sandwich in drive thru. I went at lunchtime and the drive thru line was busy but service was fast and the person at the window was friendly. I was served a hot and fresh Rib Sandwich and fries. So far, I am having a very pleasant experience at this Burger King location.

Burger King’s Rib Sandwich

Burger King's Rib SandwichEven though I have had several bad experiences as of late at Burger King, I want this sandwich to be good. First, the sandwich looks smaller than I expected. However, when I check it for size against the McRib they are both about the same size by weight, 7.2 ounces for the Rib Sandwich vs. 7.3 ounces for the McRib. I guess the shape of the McRib must make it look bigger. The first plus for the Rib Sandwich is that the toasted artisan style bun is very good. The bun is soft and slightly sweet. Somewhat similar to the bun used at Arby’s for their new King’s Hawaiian Roast Beef & Swiss. The bun for the Rib Sandwich held together well and tasted fresh. The next plus is the tangy BBQ Sauce. The BBQ Sauce was very good and combined the sweet with tangy to provide good flavor to the Rib Sandwich. The crispy bread and butter pickles were also a great addition that added a little crispiness to this sandwich. I left the Boneless Rib Patty to last because it was ok, but not great considering the rest of the sandwich. The charring on the patty was a welcome addition and did add a good flavor to the patty. The only problem I had with the Rib Patty was its taste. As I said, it was ok but it tasted like the processed meat patties you get in those old school TV dinners. It tastes kind of like meat but you are not sure what kind of meat.

McDonald’s McRib

I am a fan of the McDonald’s McRib. Whenever the McRib comes back, I must have one. I like everything about the McRib, from the tart pickles to the slivered onions. I like the hoagie style bun, the BBQ Sauce that McDonald’s uses and of course, I like the Pork Patty. Everything in the McRib comes together to bring sweet, tart, texture and taste to life.

Summary

From a taste perspective, I say that the McDonald’s McRib wins out but only because of the Pork Patty. All the other ingredients on the Burger King Rib Sandwich are better tasting then the McDonald’s McRib. If you like the McRib, go ahead and try Burger King’s version. You may not have the same issue I had with the pork patty. Comparing Nutrition for these two sandwiches the McRib comes out slightly ahead. However, neither Rib Sandwich is very healthy. I would say that the McDonald’s McRib is in no danger of being dethroned by Burger King’s Rib Sandwich any time soon.
